Grand Canyon National Park Asteraceae Checklist With Additional Information As part of confirming the determination of Symphyotrichum falcatum in September 2006, I compiled an Asteraceae Checklist for the Grand Canyon with additional information, including bloom times and elevation ranges. That list, given below, is useful for quickly determining possible candidate identifications for a given specimen based on its location, elevation, month in which it was observed in bloom, whether the flowers had ligules or not, and the color of the ligules. It is also useful in quickly looking up the correspondence in plant scientific names between the current Grand Canyon Checklist and the 1987 Flora. The list contains 304 taxa.
The best way to use this list is to put it into a spreadsheet, where it can be more easily viewed and sorted on various fields. For example, if you observe a flower with white ligules at 5000 feet elevation in July, you can quickly eliminate a large number of possible determinations by sorting the list on ligules present; ligules white; elevation 5000 feet; bloom period including July. Note the following caveats when doing so:
- since the table is incomplete in some fields (see below), you must be careful only to eliminate taxa that have entries in the various fields and carry along taxa without entries.
- the elevations and bloom times were determined using vouchers, not from field surveys, and hence are conservative. Species will be present outside the elevation limits given in the table, and they will sometimes bloom outside the range given. You should not rule out taxa that have elevations just outside the elevation under consideration, and you should include taxa in your search that bloom within a month or two of your observation.
Using the above example, you can first eliminate 110 taxa that are marked as having no ligules, leaving 194 taxa that either are marked has having ligules, or contain no marking in that field. You can then eliminate a further 136 taxa that have colors other than white, again retaining the taxa with no color indicated. This leaves 58 taxa. You can then eliminate the 15 taxa found only below 4500 feet (you must be conservative in rejecting taxa on elevation since floras rarely contain the highest and lowest actual elevations), and the 14 taxa found only above 6000 feet. This leaves 29 taxa. Finally, you can eliminate the 2 species that bloom only in May or earlier, and the 2 taxa that bloom only in September or later. That leaves just 25 taxa in which to search for the possible determination. Location information may rule out some of these quickly.
If you find no match in the remaining candidates, you perhaps were too strict in eliminating candidates based on elevation or bloom times, and should consider taxa just outside your search ranges.
Opening this page in most spreadsheet programs will put the table into spreadsheet format. Copying and then pasting the values will eliminate any residual html formatting.
The list consists of:
- the 304 Asteraceae taxa from the 1 October 2005 Grand Canyon Plant List available here;
- the location, color, flowering period, life cycle, and abundance information from the 40 Asteraceae taxa in the Checklist of Selected Plants of the Grand Canyon Area, compiled by Therean E. and Karen L. Taylor, 1992.
- the elevation range, flowering period, and some location information from the 248 Asteraceae taxa in the Annotated Checklist of Vascular Plants of Grand Canyon National Park (Monograph No. 7), Barbara G. Phillips, Arthur M. Phillips, III; and Marilyn Ann Schmidt Bernzott, 1987.
- whether the flower had ligules, and the color of the ligules, from a variety of references such as the Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California.
The table is not complete in every field, especially the presence of ligules, ligule color, locations, and synonyms, since my primary goal was to try to find possible candidates for the Symphyotrichum falcatum plants. For example, if I knew a given species could not be the identification, I generally didn't enter that information. At the time of my next visit to the Grand Canyon, I'll probably make the table more complete for every field.
The table is complete for the elevations and flowering period for all taxa present in the 1987 Grand Canyon Flora. If there is no entry for the 1987 Grand Canyon Flora Name, that taxon was not present in that Flora and is a more recent addition to the Grand Canyon Plant List, without such information available.
A non-native species is indicated by an asterisk before the Grand Canyon Plant List Name.
The flower color is generally the ligule color; if no ligules are present, it is the disk corolla color.
The five columns after the Flower Color are location information for the following places: North Rim (NR); South Rim (SR); Toroweap and western North Rim area (TWP); Inner Canyon (IC), everything below the rims including the Tonto Platform; Inner Gorge (IG), everything below the Tonto Platform or equivalent formation. Symbols are: c - common; u - uncommon; r - rare; x - present in that location without an abundance estimate.
Life cycles are: annual (a); biennial (b); perennial (p); perennial with somewhat woody lower stems (subshrub; ss); shrub (s).
The field Locations / Comments primarily contains information for taxa found in only a few locations. Sometimes those locations are vague (such as North Rim), which is why the elevation fields are empty.
