Grand Canyon Flora: Dripping Springs and Hermit Trails

Introduction
Checklist

Introduction

This is a checklist of species observed on 5 September 2013 on 2.3 miles of the Hermit Trail and Dripping Springs Trail, from the Hermit Trailhead to a point about halfway between the Dripping Springs Trail junction and Dripping Springs, augmented by vouchers and other records from the area.

The survey work here began on the Dripping Springs Trail, where we recorded all species we saw on that section of the trail. On the Hermit Trail, we then only recorded additional species not previously seen on the Dripping Springs Trail.

Checklist

The checklist is in the traditional order of ferns and fern allies; conifers; dicots, and monocots, with names mostly as in the 2005 Grand Canyon Checklist.

The column Fam gives the first three letters in the family name.

The Scientific Name is linked to the SEINet page on each taxon, which will open in a new window.

An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.

The column #Plants / V gives estimates of the minimum abundance for each species, up to a maximum of 99 plants, for those species we have observed on the Dripping Springs Trail (column header DS) and on the Hermit Trail (column header Hrmt). If we made no estimate of the abundance, but have observed a species on either of these two trails, there is an x in that column. If we have not observed a species on a given trail, but there is a voucher of it from that trail, or it was mentioned as occurring in the Hermit Basin in the 1987 Flora of the Grand Canyon, that column contains a V. If the voucher is from below 5000 feet elevation, we have put parentheses around the V as in (V).

An R in that column indicates a species only found on the Rim just above the Hermit Trailhead.

Species with no entries in either the #Pls and #V have been added from other references as mentioned above.

The survey work here began on the Dripping Springs Trail, so that column is much more complete than the column for the Hermit Trail. Species were only noted on the Hermit Trail if they were not previously found on the Dripping Springs Trail, or were noted for some other reason than a systematic survey.

In particular, species noted on the Dripping Springs Trail may or may not also be present on the Hermit Trail! Do not interpret a blank in the Hermit Trail column as being evidence that those species are not present there.

Acknowledgments

We thank all the many people who went to the time and trouble to collect vouchers for this area, so that the species list here could be compiled. That species list from the vouchers was an immense help in getting species determinations from our surveys. We specifically thank Wendy Hodgson and Glenn Rink for their voucher collection efforts, and for their direct help in getting correct determinations for some of the species we observed.

We thank Lori Makarick, the Vegetation Program Manager at Grand Canyon National Park, for creating and maintaining a spreadsheet of all the species in Grand Canyon National Park. That spreadsheet was instrumental for this project.
