Plants of Southern California: Mentzelia albicaulis, M. montana, and M. veatchiana

Mentzelia albicaulis, M. montana, and M. veatchiana are very similar species. M. veatchiana is usually distinguished by its orange to orange-yellow petal lobes, whereas the other two species have yellow petal lobes (all species usually have an orange throat). This page currently just displays pictures of these three species so that their petal color can be compared.

M. veatchiana also generally has longer style lengths than M. montana, (3-)3.5 to 6 mm vs. 1.5 to 3.5 (6) mm, but as can be seen from the ranges, that is not always true. M. albicaulis has styles 2 to 5 mm. The length of the style is best seen on the fruit.
