Flora of Cuyamaca Peak Area, Laguna Mountains, San Diego County
Introduction This checklist was made from one day of fieldwork on 1 June 2013 by Tom Chester, James Dillane, Tarja Sagar; one day of fieldwork on 9 October 2016 by Tom Chester, Keir Morse and Nancy Accola; and from vouchers.
Fieldwork on 1 June 2013
The goal of the fieldwork on 1 June 2013 was to find and study the Heuchera vouchered from Cuyamaca Peak. We only secondarily noted species as we were hiking, and we ignored some species entirely, like Carex. Some species were observed but not noted on the checklist, since we were not able to identify confidently which species were observed since the plants were not in identifiable form, being too young or too old. These include Gayophytum, Eriogonum davidsonii or molestum, and Claytonia species. In addition, since most of the pines were resprouting, we only recorded those for which we observed cones that were still present from before the fire.
We supply a rough estimate of the minimum number of plants we saw, but since recording abundances was not one of our goals, and since these estimates were made six days later, many estimates could be quite low.
Our route was up the Cuyamaca Peak Fire Road, and down via the Conejas Trail / Azalea Spring Fire Road.
A total of 177 taxa are noted below from our fieldwork.
Fieldwork on 9 October 2016
Details to be added.
Vouchers
Vouchers were searched on 31 May 2013 at Consortium of California Herbaria. A geographic coordinate search, for vouchers with coordinates, was made for the region of 32.94 to 32.97° north latitude and -116.62 to -116.58° east longitude. The search was augmented by separate locality searches for "Cuyamaca Peak"; for "Azalea Spring"; and for "Cherry Flat", for vouchers without coordinates.
One voucher of Microseris nutans was rejected since it was badly georeferenced (it was actually from Siskiyou County). Two vouchers of Heuchera brevistaminea were changed to H. rubescens, since that was what we found at the location of those two vouchers. A check of those vouchers by Mike Simpson revealed that the vouchered plants were immature.
The vouchers yielded a total of 349 taxa.
134 taxa were found both in the fieldwork and were vouchered. 43 taxa were found only in the fieldwork. 216 taxa were found only in vouchers, which cover a much larger area than the area covered by the fieldwork.
Checklist See:
- Notes on the Scientific Names Used At This Site and
- Information about the order in which the species are presented, and the links from the Scientific Name and Common Name.
An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.
The family name is abbreviated to the first three characters in order to save space in the table rows.
The column #V gives the number of vouchers for this area.
The column #Pls gives our estimate of the minimum number of plants of each taxa found along our survey route.
