Grand Canyon Flora: Dripping Springs, Hermit and Waldron Trails

Introduction
Checklist

Introduction

This is a checklist of species observed on 24 August 2016 on the Hermit Trail and on a short portion of the Waldron Trail, as well as species observed on the Dripping Springs and Hermit Trail on 5 September 2013.

The main purpose of this page was to get the GPS points to the Grand Canyon group so they could do another survey of the Hermit Trail on 4 October 2016. Species observed only on the Waldron Trail have GPS numbers from 59 to 76. If you desire a list only for the Hermit Trail, ignore species that have GPS numbers in that range.

Some species have multiple GPS points. Most of those were GPS'd on the way up, trying to find the highest location.

See also the Plant Trail Guide for the Hermit and Waldron Trails

Checklist

The checklist is in the traditional order of ferns and fern allies; conifers; dicots, and monocots, with names mostly as in the 2005 Grand Canyon Checklist.

The column Fam gives the first three letters in the family name.

The Scientific Name for most species is linked to the SEINet page on each taxon, which will open in a new window.

An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.

The column #Pls gives estimates of the minimum abundance for each species, mostly on the Hermit Trail, up to a maximum of 99 plants. If we made no estimate of the abundance, there is an x in that column. If we have not observed a species on a given trail, but there is a voucher of it from that trail, or it was mentioned as occurring in the Hermit Basin in the 1987 Flora of the Grand Canyon, that column contains a V. If the voucher is from below 5000 feet elevation, we have put parentheses around the V as in (V).

Abundances on the Dripping Springs Trail are in the flora compiled on the 5 September 2013 fieldtrip.

Species with no entries in either the #Pls and #V have been added from other references as mentioned above.

Acknowledgments

We thank all the many people who went to the time and trouble to collect vouchers for this area, so that the species list here could be compiled. That species list from the vouchers was an immense help in getting species determinations from our surveys. We specifically thank Wendy Hodgson and Glenn Rink for their voucher collection efforts, and for their past direct help in getting correct determinations for some of the species we observed.

The spreadsheet of all the species in Grand Canyon National Park, created and maintained by Lori Makarick, the Vegetation Program Manager at Grand Canyon National Park, was instrumental for this project.
