Plant Checklist for PCT Mission Springs to 2N01 north of Onyx Summit, San Bernardino Mountains
Introduction This checklist includes the results of surveys from three different sections of the PCT, from just north of Mission Springs to Coon Creek Jumpoff; from the Coon Creek Jumpoff to Onyx Summit; and from Onyx Summit to 2N01. Some of the surveys were done combining some of those sections, and hence some of those surveys cannot be cleanly assigned to one of those segments. Hence the checklist presented here includes species from all those sections, with different columns indicating the area surveyed.
Also see a checklist only for the PCT Mission Springs to Coon Creek.
Checklist The column #V gives the number of vouchers found in this area. A P before the number indicates a taxon vouchered on or near the PCT. The area searched for vouchers was 34.12 to 34.16° latitude;-116.77 to -116.7° longitude. Because most of the vouchers were taken from wet areas in the drainages below the PCT, vouchered species were only included in this checklist if we observed the species, or if the voucher was taken from the immediate vicinity of the PCT. One exception is the inclusion of Drymocallis lactea var. lactea, since we do not know the determination of a Drymocallis observed in fruit on 31 July 2014, and it is possible is is that taxon. Vouchers were searched on 21 July 2014.
The column S1 gives the minimum number of plants of each species found in a survey on 22 July 2014, by Tom Chester, RT Hawke, Walt Fidler and Adrienne Ballwey from just north of Mission Spring to Coon Creek Jumpoff, and in a survey on 3 August 2018, by Tom Chester, Keir Morse and Nancy Accola from Coon Creek Jumpoff south 3.2 miles to where the PCT switches from the Coon Creek drainage to the Heart Bar Creek drainage.
The column S2 gives the minimum number of plants of each species found in two surveys. The first was on 31 July 2014, by Tom Chester, RT Hawke, Adrienne Ballwey and Shaun Hawke from Coon Creek Jumpoff to Onyx Summit. The second was on 30 July 2018, by Tom Chester, Nancy Accola and Walt Fidler, from Onyx Summit to Coon Creek Jumpoff.
The column S3 indicates whether a taxon was observed by RT and Shaun Hawke from Rainbow Road (2.0 miles south of Onyx Summit along the PCT) to 2N01 (3.0 miles north of Onyx Summit along the PCT). RT and Shaun have done numerous surveys of this section, including specific surveys to compile a plant list on 6, 17 and 24 May 2012, as well as more casual surveys done in many other years.
