Introduction

This loop trip is 1.3 miles round trip, with about 200 feet of elevation gain and loss. Most of the trip is very gentle in elevation change, following a creek. There is just one short steep hill with about 60 feet of elevation gain.

Highlights of This Trail

Some of the botanical highlights of this trail are:

Number of Unique Taxa On This Trail

The following histogram gives the number of trails in my database that contain each taxon on this trail. I had 90 trails in my database when this histogram was made; 4 of those trails, including this one, are at the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve. A number of "1" means the taxon has only been found on this trail among the trails in my database; numbers of "4" or smaller may indicate taxa found only at the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve.

I found 2 additional species not in the above table, since they have not yet been fully identified. The unidentified ones are marked with ? or sp in the id? column in the guide, and do not have any number given in the #all column.

Fieldwork Dates and Summary of List Changes With Time

The following table gives the dates the trail was walked and taxa recorded. After each visit, the table gives the total number of taxa on the list and the breakdown of the taxa without positive identification. See Explanation of Plant Trail Guides to understand the symbols below.

The 5/4/03 survey was only complete for the first 0.10 mile, with only common species noted from memory after that point. The 12/18/03 survey was only up to mile 0.24. The 4/15/05 fieldwork was only incidental to vouchering some plants in the first 0.2 mile. The 8/20/05 fieldwork was only incident to vouchering some plants from mile 0.2 to the end.

I thank Paula Knoll and her Canyoneer buddies for helping with the fieldwork on 4/3/05.

Version for printing, without lines and other text on this page (7 pages)

This guide has an extra character before the mile for some taxa, which indicates whether it has been vouchered (V), needs a better voucher (v), or needs a voucher for the SMER flora (N).

Comments On Specific Species

Claytonia perfoliata ssp. mexicana?, C. parviflora ssp. parviflora. The specimens at mile 0.16 are definitely C. parviflora ssp. parviflora. The specimens at mile 0.04 were missing most of their leaves on 4/3/05, but seem to be C. perfoliata ssp. mexicana. But the id will be qualified with a question mark until the leaves can be definitively observed.

Nicotiana glauca. I pulled this weed out of the ground on 2/13/04, and vouchered it. This is why the number of plants on the trail is now zero for this species.
