Introduction Flora of Cloudburst Summit, Cooper Canyon, Buckhorn Area, San Gabriel Mountains
The FloraIntroduction
This checklist contains species found in a search of vouchers from the Consortium of California Herbaria on 4 July 2014, and from the following surveys of this area:
- July 2012 of the Burkhart Trail from Buckhorn Campground to Burkhart Saddle, by Michael Charters.
- 31 May 2013 of the PCT from Cloudburst Summit to the junction with the Rattlesnake Trail, and then up the Burkhart Trail to Buckhorn Campground, by Michael Charters and Jim Adams.
- 6 June 2013 of the same trails by Michael Charters.
- 5 July 2014 of the PCT from Cloudburst Summit to the junction with the Rattlesnake Trail, north on the Burkhart Trail for 0.2 miles, and then south up the Burkhart Trail to Buckhorn Campground, by Tom Chester, Walt Fidler, Keir Morse, Adrienne Ballwey, and John Thompson.
Four species determinations from vouchers have not been accepted, since these are almost certain misdeterminations: Ericameria parryi, Phacelia californica, Phacelia hastata and Phacelia mutabilis. The first is almost certainly Ericamera nauseosa; the others are almost certainly Phacelia imbricata. We left Phacelia egena on the list, since it is possible it is found here, although that is probably yet another misdetermination of P. imbricata.
One vouchered species, Salix lutea, was extremely doubtful since this is the only voucher of that species at SnGb, and there are one zillion S. lasiolepis in the area where it is vouchered. However, we kept that species on the list until the voucher could be reexamined. Andy Sanders kindly reexamined that voucher on 29 July 2014 and it turned out to be S. lasiolepis. The flora below has been updated to remove S. lutea, but the list has not been renumbered.
For Lupinus latifolius, we rejected the single voucher determination ssp. latifolius, since there were seven vouchers of ssp. parishii, and we measured flower lengths of 15-16 mm in the field.
Statistics on the dominant collectors from the vouchers will be added in the future.
The Flora
The column #V gives the number of vouchers for this area.
The column Brk indicates that the taxon was recorded by Michael Charters on the Burkhart Trail in July 2012, or on the 5 July 2014 survey, or found by Walt Fidler in his previous surveys here. Only species not found on the PCT section were noted on the 5 July 2014 survey, and the estimated minimum number of plants seen in this area is given for those. Species recorded by Michael Charters have a MC in this column; additional ones noted by Walt Fidler have a WF in this column.
Species observed by Walt Fidler that were found in the vicinity of the trail, but which were not visible from the trail, are indicated by nr in this column.
Note that the column is incomplete for the Burkhart Trail, since it contained many of the same species found in the PCT survey on 5 July 2014, but which were not separately recorded for the Burkhart Trail.
The column PCT indicates that the taxon was recorded in the 5 July 2014 survey; by Michael Charters and Jim Adams on the PCT between Cloudburst Summit and the junction with the Rattlesnake Trail on 5/31/13 or 6/5/13; or observed by Walt Fidler on his previous trips here. If the taxon was seen in the 5 July 2014, this column includes the estimated minimum number of plants found in the entire area seen on that day; otherwise it contains MC, WF, or nr.
Species with no entry in any column were found elsewhere in this area, such as along the Angeles Crest Highway on 5 July 2014, or were found in the neighboring sections of the PCT to the east. The latter species may or may not be found in this area.
